After Sessions

As clinicians, the work we do is deeply transformative. But just as we pour so much care and energy into others, we must remember to nurture ourselves—both in our professional growth and personal well-being.

Wrapping up

1

Ensure that your next session is scheduled.

At the end of each session, take a moment to schedule the next appointment with your client. This simple step builds trust and consistency for your client while helping you maintain an organized and balanced schedule.

2

Write your clinical notes.

When working in-home, it can be challenging to find time to write notes promptly, especially when working with higher-risk clients or collaborating with other organizations.

  • Jot down notes immediately after session to maintain accuracy.

  • Set a consistent day per week to do your note taking.

3

Embrace the pause.

Life comes at us quickly, and with this work, it can be easy to fall into a routine of not taking a moment to pause and care for ourselves. Incorporating intentional pauses into your routine helps you recharge, stay grounded, and show up fully for both yourself and those you serve.

Reflective Practice is at the heart of our work as social workers. It allows us to critically reflect on decisions, processes, and the impact of our actions on clients, communities, and ourselves. Research shows that through intentional reflection, we deepen our self-awareness, recognize biases, and continuously grow in our ability to provide ethical, culturally attuned, and client-centered care.
